5 Business Stress Reducers

May 16, 2025 6:43 pm Published by Leave your thoughts

In its milder forms, stress has been shown to reduce effectiveness in many areas of productivity. When chronic, stress plays a major role in causing many kinds of mental and physical illnesses. Whether it’s simply making you less productive or has become a significant factor that is starting to rob you of enjoyment in your personal and professional life, below are five ways to effectively handle your business stress.

Rather than becoming overwhelmed with all five techniques at once, (which would be stressful), why not try just one or two and build from there? The initial reaction for most of us is, “I don’t have time to do any of these.” But I think you’ll find the reduced stress will allow you to accomplish a lot more in a lot less time and with a lot less effort.

Tools For  Reducing Business Stresss

1. Clearly Define Your Goals

Ask any stressed out or unproductive Advisor what their goals are (IE: “What do your really want?”) and chances are they have not taken the time to sit down and clearly write out their goals.  If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will do.  Goals provide focus for your daily activity and allow you to be proactive, gaining a sense of control and fulfillment.

2. Be On A Mission

Most Mission Statements are useless, ambiguous pieces of….well, clichés. Developing a mission that is meaningful to you, that you are enthusiastic and excited about, and to which you can commit your working life will drastically reduce your stress.  It’s the goal of all your goals.  You’ll find this compass keeps things in perspective when things get either very good or very bad. 3. What’s The Plan?

Your business plan details the action steps necessary for you to attain the goals set forth above. Most Advisors simply write down some wishful thinking, as if the act of really wanting it gives them a better chance of achieving their goals. Time is the #1 overlooked factor in creating a business plan for Advisors.  Anyone can double their income if they are willing to work twice as many hours, but that’s usually not the goal. Work backwards using time estimates, and you’ll end up with a much more viable plan and much less stress.

4. Make The Time

Advisors say time management is their #1 practice management challenge. How can you do a plan if you have no time? You make the time. In order to implement your business plan, create systems for personal and office efficiency. Develop your Ideal Daily/Weekly Schedule as well as office procedures that enable you to systematize and delegate. After all, it’s your business.  If you’re not willing to manage your time, other people and events will be more than happy to manage it for you, increasing your stress and reducing productivity. Now that you’ve carved out time for what’s really important…

5. Build Marketing Muscle

I have yet to see and advisor who spent one hour a day marketing for entire year fail to meet their goals.  Not as easy as it sounds, but if the other business stress busters above are in place, this part becomes a lot easier. Hint: Most Advisors skip the other tools and jump right to marketing.  Eventually, they end up actually increasing their stress from the additional “service liability” created from taking on more clients, even if revenues and income are higher.
